Physical Education (PE) Teacher – Beacon Independent School

Job Purpose 

To plan, deliver and assess high-quality Physical Education lessons for pupils aged 9–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and additional Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). 

The successful candidate will use sport and physical activity to promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, teamwork, resilience, confidence and healthy lifestyles. They will create engaging learning experiences that encourage participation, achievement and personal development while ensuring pupils remain safe during all activities. 

The role also includes supporting pupils during off-site sporting activities, educational visits and enrichment opportunities. 

Main Responsibilities 

Teaching and Learning 

• Plan and deliver engaging PE lessons that meet the needs of pupils with SEMH and SEND.  
• Adapt teaching to ensure all pupils can access the curriculum regardless of ability.  
• Promote enjoyment, participation and lifelong engagement in physical activity.  
• Deliver a broad curriculum including team sports, individual sports, fitness, outdoor education and recreational activities.  
• Use sport to develop communication, leadership, teamwork and self-esteem.  
• Assess pupils' progress and maintain accurate records.  
• Differentiate learning in line with EHCP outcomes.  
• Promote high standards of behaviour and achievement.  

Behaviour and Pastoral Support 

• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.  
• Support pupils in developing emotional regulation through structured physical activity.  
• Use restorative and trauma-informed approaches to behaviour management.  
• Promote positive attitudes, resilience and perseverance.  
• Act as a positive role model at all times.  
• Contribute to Behaviour Support Plans where required.  

Curriculum Development 

• Contribute to the development of an engaging and inclusive PE curriculum.  
• Embed literacy, numeracy and personal development within PE.  
• Promote British Values and SMSC through sport.  
• Encourage healthy lifestyles and positive wellbeing.  
• Organise sports events, competitions and enrichment opportunities where appropriate.  

Outdoor Learning and Enrichment 

The PE Teacher will support and supervise a range of enrichment activities, which may include: 

• Football  
• Basketball  
• Badminton  
• Boxing fitness  
• Fitness and gym-based activities  
• Athletics  
• Walking and hiking  
• Outdoor education  
• Orienteering  
• Fishing activities  
• Horse riding visits  
• Local leisure centre activities  
• Educational visits  

Safeguarding 

• Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.  
• Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures.  
• Report concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.  
• Maintain professional boundaries at all times.  

Health and Safety 

• Ensure PE equipment is maintained and safe to use.  
• Complete appropriate risk assessments.  
• Ensure safe supervision during all activities.  
• Administer first aid where qualified.  
• Follow school procedures for educational visits and off-site learning.  

Assessment and Reporting 

• Monitor pupil progress.  
• Write reports for parents, carers and Annual Reviews.  
• Contribute to EHCP targets.  
• Attend parents' evenings and review meetings.  
• Maintain accurate assessment records.  

Working with Others 

• Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants and support staff.  
• Liaise with parents, carers and external professionals.  
• Attend staff meetings and continuing professional development (CPD).  
• Support whole-school activities and enrichment programmes.  

General Responsibilities

Person Specification 

Essential Qualifications 

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS or an equivalent teaching qualification.  
• Degree in Physical Education, Sports Science or a related subject.  
• GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) or above in English and Mathematics.  
• Full UK driving licence (desirable for supporting off-site activities).  

Essential Experience 

• Experience teaching Physical Education across Key Stages 2–4.  
• Experience supporting pupils with SEND and/or SEMH needs.  
• Experience managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour strategies.  
• Experience planning inclusive and differentiated PE lessons.  
• Experience organising sporting activities and educational visits.  

Essential Knowledge 

• Understanding of SEMH and additional SEND.  
• Knowledge of safeguarding legislation and guidance.  
• Understanding of trauma-informed practice.  
• Knowledge of health and safety requirements within PE.  
• Understanding of risk assessment procedures.  
• Knowledge of curriculum planning and assessment.

• Experience working within an SEMH or alternative provision setting.  
• Outdoor education qualifications.  
• Paediatric First Aid qualification.  
• Team Teach or equivalent positive handling training.  
• Minibus driving entitlement (D1).  
• Coaching qualifications (e.g. FA, England Athletics or Badminton England).  
• Duke of Edinburgh Award experience.  
• Forest School qualification.
